Chances are you know your
character inside and out. You
can already see what she looks
like – the color of her eyes
and the way the rose tints her
cheeks in the winter chill. You
know how tall she is and how
the belt of her sword lays at
that cock-eyed angle on her
hips.
You already identify with
her. Now you have to make
others identify with her, too.
Make your partner see her
in their minds; make them
see what you see. You want
your roleplay partner to
enjoy interacting with your
character; to engage and create
an unforgettable story with
you. Here are a few tips that
will keep them coming back for
more.
The first thing you want to
do is set the scene. You need
to give your partner enough
information in your first post
to set the scene but not so
much information that the
By Ali
story is told beforehand. You
want to let it evolve naturally,
so do not give away too many
details at first.
It is a good idea to answer these
four questions in your first post.
1.
Where?
Where is
your character? Describe her
surroundings. Is she travelling
somewhere?
2.
How?
How is she getting
there? What is the method of
travel?
3.
What?
What is she
doing? What is happening
at the moment? For many
roleplayers this is where you
can fall back on the five senses.
Describe what she is doing
with her hands – does she smell
something?
What would you see right now
if you were looking through
her eyes – what sounds is she
hearing?
You can also use the five senses
method to get in a description
of what she is wearing at the
moment.
4.
Thoughts/feelings?
What is going through her
mind as all of this unfolds?
Describe what she is feeling,
thinking, etc.
If you have answered all four
of these questions in your first
post you have set the scene!
Remember to give enough
detail that your partner does
not have to let his imagination
fill in the blanks.
There is nothing worse than
believing you are at a funeral
in a cemetery somewhere and
halfway through the roleplay
you realize that your partner
has been under the impression
that you were in at a party at
the park!
