My title here at
ReVo
is the
SeCretary of CreatiVity,
and as as you might expect,
I am the person in charge of
creative input on our site.
I describe myself as a very
creative person - there’s nothing
I love more than when my
brain revs up, filling my mind
with ideas, painting the inside
of my head with clear images,
what-ifs, fantastic combinations
and strange patterns.
In fact, even as I
sit here writing
the article, at least
three new ideas
have raced out of
the fog in my mind
- apparently they liked the
competition, and decided to be
created.
Often, it is that way with
ideas - they like to come in
the company of others, like
race cars drifting one after
another around a turn on a
track. Believe it or not, there
is a large body of research on
being creative, and the idea that
ideas love company is a theory
supported in most books that
tell you about how to become
more creative.
Those books and articles also
agree on another thing: Anyone
can be creative. Creativity is
not a skill or an ability that is
merely given to a few intrepid
souls. However, your creative
mind does need to be exercised
and used daily, just like any
other muscle. The more you
work with your creativity, the
more creative you will be - isn’t
that awesome?
But don’t think too much. Just
because the track always turns
to the left doesn’t mean you’re
stuck on that course. Logic is a
great asset, but it is best not to
rely on it early in the creative
process. People come up with
the best ideas when we have
no filters, no judgement, no
perceived limitations involved.
According to Carl Jung,
creative people know how to
mute the volume on the frontal
lobes (the analytical part of
the brain), freeing the rest of
the brain to make unexpected
connections.
So, if you want to be more
creative - in your everyday life,
in your online life and in your
roleplay, here are some tips for
you.
- Have fun.
People who enjoy what
they are doing simply
do it better. And
when you have fun,
it is just easier to go
where the silliness takes
you.
- There is always another
idea.
No matter what, there is always
another idea waiting around
the corner. If the solution does
not work out, well, there is
always another idea.
- Become a question
mark.
Ask lots of questions, and see
where the answers take you.
Be a child again, and ask why
every other second.
